The UWA Fogarty Foundation Undergraduate Scholarships Program
In partnership with The University of Western Australia
The UWA Fogarty Foundation Undergraduate Scholarships Program was established in 2004 to provide an umbrella for all entry level undergraduate scholarships. It has grown to encompass 245 entry level awards and includes the UWA Fogarty Foundation City and Regional Scholarships.
It is a joint investment, of nearly one million dollars annually, in our state’s education and in our future leaders.

Now numbering 57, these scholarships were established as an investment in the potential future leaders of our State, with up to ten City and four Regional Scholarships awarded each year. The City and Regional Scholarship recipients, known as the UWA Fogarty Scholars, are chosen from among our State’s brightest young people. They have achieved outstanding academic success and are highly accomplished in other areas including leadership, sporting, artistic and community involvement.
The aim is to provide scholarships on a par with other leading Australian universities and allow young West Australians the choice of remaining in WA to undertake their studies. The scholarships cover full tuition fees plus an annual stipend; in addition all Regional Scholarship recipients receive accommodation fees for residency at one of the University’s colleges, a total scholarship value in excess of $120,000 for each of these students over the period of their enrolment.
The number of applications for a UWA Fogarty Undergraduate Scholarship for 2011 has been unprecedented with 179 applications for a city scholarship, 41 applications for a regional scholarship and 228 applications for a Vice Chancellor’s Award as part of the UWA Fogarty Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship Programme.
In 2011, six city and two regional Scholarships have been awarded together with the Beazley Medalist. This is the fifth consecutive year that the Beazley Medalist has accepted a UWA Fogarty Undergarduate Scholarship which has resulted in the State’s top student remaining in WA to study at UWA.
Since the commencement of this partnership, a total of twenty two (22) regional and forty three (43) city scholarships have been awarded to students studying across a variety of disciplines including medicine, commerce, engineering, law and the arts.

UWA Fogarty Foundation Leadership Program
The strength of the UWA Fogarty Scholars has been the continuation of the Leadership Program which differentiates the scholarship recipients from the other university awards. The program encourages individuals to participate in UWA programs such as UniMentor, visit schools to encourage students to consider tertiary studies, play leading roles in their professional associations, working both together and as individuals to contribute back to the community.
The Leaders Series has again brought the students together to network with established community leaders and organisations. During 2010, events have included a scholars’ breakfast and ‘Fireside Chats’ involving Australia’s Astronaut Dr Andrew Thomas, UK philosopher AC Grayling, neurologist Profesor Graeme Hankey and John Atkins Chairman ANZ (WA).

The Fogarty Scholars and Alumni Association, established in 2008, has undertaken activities both during and after their time at UWA. Affectionately known as the Foggers, the students continue to produce their on-line newsletter called The Foghorn and raise money through a fund raising event.
In July, seven students from law, medicine and engineering undertook a seven day cultural awareness visit to the Pilbara. The different bodies involved in making the project so successful included Woodside, Fortescue Metals Group, Department of Corrective Services and the Department of the Attorney General, as well as local schools, indigenous groups and regional hospitals.
Alumni
Formed in 2008, the Alumni has twelve (12) enrolled graduates for 2011. Seen as an essential adjunct to the UWA Leadership Scholars Program, the Alumni aims to remain connected with graduates as they move off in their respective directions and professions.
As individuals with the potential to take on leadership, be it in their professions or community and wherever they may find themselves, the graduates will eventually have an extensive network of support and influence to call on for many years to come. In turn it is anticipated the Alumni will, over time, contribute to the development of other young West Australians.
