The Scholars are encouraged to develop their leadership potential by establishing new initiatives or projects or by taking leadership roles in projects they are passionate about.

Here’s a snapshot of some of their accomplishments:

Fogarty Scholars Association

All UWA Fogarty Scholars and Alumni automatically become part of the Fogarty Scholars Association, a student-run body which aims to strengthen the network of the group so that they can achieve greater impact.

In 2017, the FSA:

  • ran a mentoring program for Scholars and Alumni
  • organised the Fogarty Futures Leadership Conference for year 10 and 11 high school students
  • hosted lots of fun, social get-togethers where Scholars got to strengthen their friendships, including their annual weekend bonding trip

Mark Shelton (Scholar) is the co-founder and CEO of Bloom bringing together a community of high potential young entrepreneurs.

Bloom provides workshops, a co-working space, mentoring and support to accelerate their ideas into successful ventures.

West Australian TV Network (WASTV)

In 2012, Binu Jayawardena (Alumni) and Michael Taran (Scholar) co-founded WA Student TV – WA’s first video production social enterprise – as they saw a need for affordable media services to the local Not for profit (NFP) community.

WASTV is now a social enterprise, providing professional film and photography services to the WA community so that NFP groups can be heard, seen and appreciated by all.  These services are partially funded through WASTV’s paid services – a wide range of media services including producing, screenwriting, casting, filming, editing sound mixing and automated dialogue replacement.

“WASTV Volunteers” is the volunteering arm of the organisation and these pro bono productions account for the vast majority of WASTV’s projects. The Fogarty Foundation was fortunate to be the recipient of WASTV’s great services in 2016 when they assisted with the filming of the speeches at our annual Scholars Showcase Event, inspirED – thanks WASTV!

WASTV now delivers in excess of $100,000 of professional media services to the local community free of charge each year
