What is Educated?

Education is everyone's responsibility, and next February the Fogarty Foundation's annual event EDUCATED invites educators, policymakers, school leaders, community advocates and sector partners to join the conversation and help shape the future of education in WA. Hosted by the Foundation, an organisation with a quarter of a century's experience in education, EDUCATED 2027 asks what makes a mind future ready.

Creativity and critical thinking are widely recognised as essential skills for a modern world, but they are not produced by any single subject area. Foundations such as the arts, reading and civic awareness all play a role in developing them, and STEM is equally important in building the problem-solving skills young people need to think critically. It is the combination of these areas, not any one alone, that grows a future-ready mind.

Keynote Speaker - Peter Ellerton

The way we think about knowledge is being challenged. In a world shaped by information overload, and rapid technological change, the ability to reason well is a defining skill of a future-ready mind.

This is why we've invited Peter Ellerton to keynote. As Curriculum Director of the University of Queensland's Critical Thinking Project and a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy and Education, he has spent his career teaching people not just what to think, but how to think well, across Australia and internationally.

In this keynote, Peter will explore why critical thinking is vital in an age where facts are contested and information is everywhere, and how schools can build it. Drawing on his work with educators, as well as with organisations from the Queensland Police Force to the Australian Defence Force, he'll make the case that a future-ready mind is grown through the combination of these areas.

Listen our CEO and guest speakers recap our 2026 event. The 2026 theme, Aspirations in Education, dove into how young people’s aspirations are nurtured and how a more aspirational system can be created in WA for our students, teachers, and school leaders. The event sparked meaningful conversation, encourage collaboration, and highlighted the role of leadership, innovation and shared responsibility in shaping the state’s future.

"Education has the power to transform lives. It supports young people to realise their potential by providing skills they need to participate in the economy and society and contributing to every aspect of their well-being."

PRIORITIES FOR EDUCATION IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA

EDUCATED began in 2025 in partnership with the UWA Public Policy Institute. The first event focused on policy-driven solutions for advancing education across Western Australia. Its aim was to offer influential leaders the chance to share insights on the role of policy in driving positive change for students and teachers across the state. The event promotes collaborative discussion on actionable strategies to support WA's educational future.
