  • It is vital that young people receive an excellent education. We know that geographic and socio-economic factors can lead to unequal access to high quality teaching and resources. We focus on tangible solutions that strengthen teaching capability and whole school improvement, so excellent teaching and learning opportunities are accessible to more students. This work includes the ethical and equitable use of artificial intelligence in education; AI literacy and knowledge that can enhance teaching and support learning when applied thoughtfully. This is about equipping educators, particularly in under-resourced settings, with capabilities that improve outcomes and ensure students across the state benefit from high-quality learning.

  • Over 20 years ago, we identified that too many high-achieving young people leave Western Australia to study and develop their careers elsewhere, reducing the state's cohort of emerging leaders and limiting the networks of talent that drive innovation. To address this, we invest in identifying and nurturing young leaders here; developing initiatives like Fogarty Ripple so they can grow, connect and contribute within Western Australia. By building clusters of high-potential individuals and supporting their development locally, we strengthen the state's leadership pipeline and create conditions where talent multiplies rather than disperses.

While we have engaged consultants for specific projects, for hands-on education volunteering, we recommend contacting your local CoderDojo WA or reaching out to EDConnect.

The UWA Fogarty Scholarship provides $12,500 annually for up to 16 semesters of undergraduate and postgraduate studies at UWA. Scholars also gain access to an Expand Fund through the Fogarty Ripple Program, offering unique opportunities to enhance their journey:

  • Jeremy Cheang Award: $2,000 annually to one Scholar, celebrating exceptional innovation, achievements, or community contributions.
  • Initiative Funding: Grants of up to $2,000 for projects or ventures aligned with the Foundation's mission, such as Teach Learn Grow or Bloom.
  • UWA Global Learning Grant: Up to $1,500 for travel funding to support exchange programs or summer opportunities.

All UWA Fogarty Scholars gain access to Fogarty Ripple; an enhanced leadership accelerator program, created to equip participants with the mindset, skills and experiences needed to lead meaningful change; both locally and globally.

During the program, Fogarty Ripple provides opportunities for participants to engage with mentors, participate in structured workshops and bootcamps, and deliver real-world projects. These experiences are designed to enable participants to practice leadership in applied settings while building professional networks and confidence. Head to the Fogarty Ripple page to learn more.

10 hours of mentoring in the first two years, guided by UWA academics and peers.

In addition to the $12,500 per annum, UWA Fogarty Scholars can access an accommodation scholarship at St Catherine's College UWA, offering a full-fee reduction for Scholars from UWA Broadway schools and a 50% fee reduction for Scholars from other schools for the duration of their undergraduate degree. Further terms and conditions of this Scholarship apply.

The Scholarship connects you to a network of accomplished scholars, industry professionals, and exclusive opportunities to enhance your personal and professional growth.

The FSA operates in close partnership with the Foundation to empower Scholars to make a positive impact in society.

  • Increase awareness and understanding of AI in education by providing foundational knowledge to teachers, school leaders, and sector stakeholders.
  • Highlight practical AI initiatives currently being implemented in WA schools, showcasing real-world applications and early successes.
  • Deliver hands-on professional development that equips educators and leaders with the skills, tools, and confidence to integrate AI responsibly in classrooms and school operations.
  • Foster a collaborative, cross-sector network of educators, industry experts, and policymakers to support ongoing learning and innovation.
  • Assess the current landscape of AI literacy in WA schools through pre- and post-Forum surveys of teachers and school leaders, identifying strengths, gaps, and future needs.

The Forum is a two-day event bringing together educators, school leaders, government representatives, and industry partners to explore the ethical and practical integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in WA’s K–12 education system. It is led by the Fogarty Foundation and co-hosted with the Beyond Boundaries Institute.

This Forum is designed for K–12 teachers, school leaders, and education sector professionals across all WA education sectors (government, Catholic, independent, and specialist). It particularly supports early adopters of AI and those new to the space. A limited number of general public tickets are also available.

No. Sessions are designed for a range of experience levels. Whether you’re an AI novice or already experimenting in your school, there will be valuable insights and practical resources for you.

Yes! The event is committed to equitable access and strongly encourages participation from metropolitan, regional, and remote schools. Travel support options may be available—please contact us for more information.

  • Day 1: Sector showcases, keynotes, and school-led breakout sessions sharing real-world AI examples
  • Day 2: Streamed professional development workshops for teachers and leaders, with hands-on training and co-design sessions

Select sessions may be recorded or summarised for inclusion in the final report. If recordings are made available, registered attendees will be notified post-event.

Presenters include leaders from WA’s major education sectors, national leaders and experts in AI, Data Science and education. The full program will be announced in the coming weeks.

Yes! Schools using AI in interesting or emerging ways are encouraged to submit proposals for breakout sessions. Contact us before 1st October 2025 to be considered.

Yes. Morning tea and lunch will be provided on both days.

We will not be recording the forum. However key quotes, takeaways and resources may be shared after.

We are very interested in gauging interest from regional schools and plan for the professional development to visit regional hubs in the future. We know that needs can differ significantly across regions, so one event can’t cover everything; regional engagements are a key way to ensure PD is tailored to each context.

We want to work closely with schools that are interested and ensure a range of voices informs our next steps in increasing AI literacy across WA, beyond the metro areas. If your school would like to get involved or stay updated on regional opportunities, please get in touch.

Due to the nature of this event, the Forum will be a no soliciting event.

We encourage industry and business owners to purchase a ticket to attend the Forum and contribute to the discussions if interested, however, selling or pitching AI products or solutions will not be allowed. The breakout sessions will primarily be a showcase and platform for schools to share what they are developing and delivering in their own communities, as such we will not be inviting expressions of interest from those selling AI products or solutions to present as part of the Forum.

  • Chris Bush

    Churchill Fellow

Chris Bush is a Churchill Fellow whose research began with a problem every teacher knows: too many students, not enough time, and never being able to give each student what they actually need.

After ten years teaching in Victorian secondary schools, Chris built an AI chatbot trained on the economics curriculum that could provide personalised support for his students. Their test scores jumped. But that success raised a bigger question: if this works, why isn't every student getting this kind of support?

His Churchill Fellowship took him to five countries to find out how education systems are handling AI. What he found was stark: AI is creating a "double equity crisis" where students with advantages pull further ahead while others are left behind.

Currently teaching at University High School in Melbourne, Chris works with schools and education systems across Australia. Through workshops, consultations, and strategic planning, he helps educators reimagine what education is for in an AI age while ensuring every student benefits, not just some.
