Space exploration is a powerful tool to inspire curiosity & ambition in young minds across WA

At The Fogarty Foundation, we believe that learning about the wonders of the universe can ignite young people’s passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), encouraging them to dream big and think creatively.

Education is, without a doubt, the best way for individuals to reach their full potential and lead purposeful lives. When young people are excited about learning, society as a whole becomes more prosperous, cohesive, and capable of creating meaningful jobs for everyone.

But how do we engage young people and help them value their education? How do we inspire them to explore STEM, challenge themselves, consider post-secondary pathways, and broaden their horizons?

Connecting students and communities with the awe-inspiring possibilities of space is a powerful start. Over the next few years, we will be supporting a number of initiatives and showcasing inspiring and engaging activities linked with space to highlight the incredible opportunities in this sector. Western Australia is home to over 130 national and international organisations in space, attracting brilliant minds—from NASA scientists to astrophysicists—who work on pioneering projects like the Square Kilometre Array. With support from WA’s Minister for Innovation and Digital Economies, Stephen Dawson, the “Place for Space” focus aims to show our young people that space isn’t just out there; it’s right here in WA, full of potential.

To make the most of these opportunities, we need a new generation equipped with the skills and aspirations to lead us forward. By inspiring curiosity and excitement for STEM through the marvels of space, we’re empowering young Western Australians to reach for the stars and contribute to a brighter, innovative future.
