AI is Reshaping Education — Is WA Ready?

Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the way we live, work, and learn, bringing both exciting opportunities and complex challenges. In education, AI has the potential to reduce teacher workload, personalise learning, and better prepare students for the future of work.

Yet, as AI adoption accelerates nationally and globally, Western Australia risks falling behind. Many of our schools, educators, and students are still navigating what AI means for teaching and learning.

The State of AI in WA Schools Forum will gather 200 educators and school leaders for two days of learning and hands-on exploration. The forum will be a space to explore these questions together; openly, thoughtfully, and with a shared commitment to shaping a future where AI supports equity, innovation, and excellence in education.

Driving Educational Innovation Together

The Fogarty Foundation has partnered with the Beyond Boundaries Institute (BBI) at All Saints’ College to deliver the State of AI in WA Schools Forum. BBI is recognised for its leadership in educational innovation and its ability to bring together educators, researchers and community leaders to explore and test new approaches to teaching and learning. Their expertise and networks make them an ideal collaborator for this forum, ensuring it not only highlights the opportunities and challenges of AI in schools, but also provides a space for practical, future-focused dialogue that empowers educators to adapt with confidence and creativity.

Program Outline

The forum will run over two days, bringing together educators, school leaders, policymakers, and sector partners to explore the current landscape, share practical insights, and build AI readiness in WA schools, and critical AI literacy skills in our teachers and students. The full program will be released soon.

  • Day 1: Sector Showcase & Practical Updates

Theme: Understanding the Current Landscape & Learning from Early Adopters
Audience: Educators, school leaders, policymakers, sector partners, and industry representatives

The Forum will open with a Welcome to Country, remarks from forum hosts, and contributions from sector leaders.

An opening keynote will set the scene for the forum, introducing the main theme, followed by sector presentations, featuring key representatives from education sectors and moderated discussions with Q&A.

Attendees then have a networking break, followed by sessions on AI safety, infrastructure, and ethics, featuring expert talks or panel discussions.

A lunch break provides further networking opportunities before a presentation on national AI initiatives, sharing insights and strategies for adapting AI education to the local context.

The afternoon includes breakout streams showcasing early adopters, where schools demonstrate practical applications of AI across teaching tools, student data management, parent communication, and administrative processes.

The day concludes with closing reflections, including a young person’s perspective, a summary of key takeaways.

  • Day 2: Professional Development

Theme: Building Confidence, Capacity & School-Ready Practice
Audience: Educators and school leaders (with tailored sessions by streams)

Day 2 focuses on practical professional development to help educators and school leaders build confidence and capacity in applying AI in school settings.

Attendees will participate in streamed professional development sessions tailored to their roles:

    • Classroom teachers engage in hands-on workshops supporting the delivery of AI literacy programs in schools.
    • School leaders take part in professional learning focused on leading in an AI-enabled environment.
    • Mixed groups experience live demonstrations and practical exercises with AI tools applicable across teaching and leadership roles.

Following a combined lunch, the afternoon continues with deeper learning sessions. Teachers explore scenario planning and policy development to shape AI strategy at the school level, while mixed groups engage in collaborative design, co-creating use-cases and supports relevant to their contexts.

The day concludes with a closing session for participants to share reflections, showcase ideas, and discuss key takeaways. Closing remarks and next steps are presented by the Fogarty Foundation, outlining ongoing resources, support, and opportunities for continued collaboration.

Yes. Morning tea and lunch will be provided on both days.

Key sessions, including keynote speeches, panels, and presentations, will be recorded. However, the professional development sessions will not be recorded due to their interactive nature.

As we announce presenters for the forum, we will also share free resources that are already available to support professional development and AI literacy in schools. This forum is just the beginning; we hope to collaborate with schools to increase AI literacy across WA. If you have any questions about future professional development opportunities, resources, or connections, please get in touch.

We are very interested in gauging interest from regional schools and plan for the professional development to visit regional hubs in the future. We know that needs can differ significantly across regions, so one event can’t cover everything; regional engagements are a key way to ensure PD is tailored to each context.

We want to work closely with schools that are interested and ensure a range of voices informs our next steps in increasing AI literacy across WA, beyond the metro areas. If your school would like to get involved or stay updated on regional opportunities, please get in touch.
